All of this helps make the overarching plot more impactful as it gradually clears up, leading to a climax that’s spicier than I expected a nice twist for a game that is usually so kinetic. This elaborate story setup translates into reaching and clearing anomalies that disrupt the pipes, then defeating each area’s hulking boss creature.Īction platforming is Solar Ash’s main driver, but it’s also interested in worldbuilding, and has plenty to dig into through story elements like audio logs left by Rei’s missing teammates, scribbled notes in the environment, a handful of survivors you can talk to, and interrogating, Rei’s friendly AI constructs Cyd on the details of the mission. These are needed to power a giant, monolithic piece of technology called the Starseed – which in turn is the only hope of closing the black hole itself and saving Rei’s planet from impending destruction. You are Rei, a Voidrunner who has ventured into a black hole called The Ultravoid, trying to find out what happened to all your companions and ensure that the pipes they set up in the various sectors of the void, be operational. In Solar Ash you’ll be faced with platforming challenges, light puzzles, encounters with enemies, bosses and impossible spaces – and you make your way through it all, accompanied by a suitably atmospheric, synth-driven sci-fi score.

Solar Ash’s vibrant color palette is reminiscent of developer Heart Machine’s latest game, Hyper Light Drifter, but transformed into a 3D open world, where momentum is the overriding design principle. Rei considers the Ultravoid before jumping in.

Solar Ash has some big ideas, and while the skating isn’t all smooth thanks to minor handling quirks and some design elements that don’t quite reach their full potential, it’s certainly a journey worth taking. Above me, a monstrous-looking creature known as a Remnant patrols the sky, and it’s so big I’ll literally skate down its back if I confront it and kill it part of a desperate effort to save my home planet from falling victim to The Ultravoid’s insatiable hunger. This is all that remains of many forgotten worlds, inexorably sucked into the pull of a huge black hole.

I glide serenely through the undulating turquoise sea, enjoying the silky sense of movement as I make a path through this landscape of… what? Clouds?! The Ultravoid is a completely surreal place – beautiful, colorful, but also broken, desolate.
